Vermillion Gets #400

Arlington Head Coach Jason Vermillion achieved his 400th win with a 57-56 victory over Anna on January 14, 2024. In his 26th year as head coach, Vermillion now sits with an overall record of 400-190 and averages over 15 wins each season.

“To achieve 400 wins in your career requires consistency, adaptability, and dedication,” says Seth Newlove, assistant varsity basketball coach.

Throughout his tenure, Coach Vermillion has won 6 BVC titles and appeared in 7 district finals. His 2012 team was the regional champion and appeared in the State Final Four.

Vermillion is a five-time BVC Coach of the Year (‘03, ‘04, ‘06, ‘12, ‘13). He also earned District 8 Coach of the Year (‘04) and OHSAA DIV IV Coach of the Year (‘03-’04) among other accolades.

Vermillion’s track record is nothing short of impressive, but his most notable achievement is the impact he has had on his players.

“One of the most important things I have learned from Coach is that the team is bigger than yourself,” says Thayne Recker, former player (‘12) and current JV coach for the Red Devils. “He showed us if we work hard, buy into his idea, and play with passion, that we could do anything we set out to do. He made us responsible for our actions whether it was having everything we needed for a game or practice, showing up on time, and making sure we left locker rooms and gyms in better shape than when we got there.”

Basketball is a way of life for Vermillion and his family. His son Jaret Vermillion has been a manager, player, and now serves on staff as the reserve basketball coach. “Now to be on the other side of it as a coach getting to experience his 400th win, I can see why he has won so many games in his career by all the work he puts in outside of practice, with all of the scouting he does, all of the new things that he finds, the way that he runs his teams. There is a lot more to it that a lot of people don’t know about.”

Not only has Vermillion developed a winning tradition for Arlington’s basketball program, but he has also developed lifelong relationships along the way.

“Coach Vermillion places high importance on establishing quality, lasting relationships with his players, coaches, parents, officials, and administration,” says Newlove. “Arlington has been fortunate to have such a quality coach and an even better person run the basketball program.”

Congratulations, Coach Vermillion!
