Red Cross Blood Drive

Making the decision that you want to give blood is the first step, but now you have a plethora of other things that you must do. Here is a checklist of all the things that you have to do in preparation of giving blood

 

1. You have to be at least 16 years old and if you’re under 18, you still have to have a parent or guardian’s consent to donate. You can pick up a permission slip from Mrs. Barger until the day of the drive. This consent form must be signed and returned by January 29th, or you can bring it with you to the drive.

2. You must be feeling well and healthy the day of donation, and you also have to meet weight requirements. The weight requirements vary based on height and sex, but the general requirement is a minimum of 110 pounds. If you’re having your period the day of donation, you can still attempt to give, but due to a loss of blood and therefore iron, you may not be eligible.

3. You must bring either a state issued ID, a donor card, a driver’s license/permit, or some other form of legitimate identification which has your photograph on it.

4. You have to prepare yourself ahead of time. To keep yourself feeling well on the day of donation, drink water and eat foods high in iron (like quinoa, raisins, and beef) days in advance. Then, on the day of donation, make sure to wear a comfortable top that can easily be moved to expose your inner elbow.

5. Non-students and walk-ins are also welcome- just make sure you bring an ID! Non-students and walk-ins are asked to enter through the cafeteria doors and head to the old gym. The drive will last from 8am to 1pm.
