Cheerleading Tryouts 2019-2020

By: Glen Thompson

Once again, cheerleading tryouts are here! Cheerleading is a way to enjoy an activity that involves non-strenuous exercise while growing close with your teammates of all ages and genders and building school spirit. If you’re interested in cheering for the 2019-2020 school year, you can pick up a tryout packet and sign your name on the tryout sheet in Mrs. Cortez’s or Mrs. Thines’s rooms until May 13th.

To tryout for cheerleading, there are a few different criteria that you have to meet. You will be required to learn a series of different cheerleading skills, that include-

Varsity and JV Candidates

-A cheer
-A sideline cheer
-A dance
-2 jumps (hurdler, herkie, pike, toe touch-required)
-2 gymnastic skills (cartwheel, round-off, front/back walkover, front/back handspring, etc)
-Splits

7th and 8th Grade Candidates

-A cheer
-A sideline cheer
-A dance
-2 jumps x-jumpy/eagle, tuck, hurdler, herkie, pike, toe touch-required)
-2 gymnastic skills (cartwheel, round-off, front/back walkover, front/back handspring, etc)
-Splits

However intimidating this may seem, all of the listed items are taught at the cheerleading clinics, a 3-day after-school learning session for all upcoming cheerleaders. These sessions are held the following days

         May 13th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm

         May 15th from 3:15pm to 4:30pm

         May 16th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm

Tryouts are the following Monday, the 20th, from 4:00 to 7:00pm.

Something else that aspiring cheerleaders will need to take into consideration are the teacher evaluation forms. You have to ask five or three, depending on your grade, of your teachers if they will fill out an evaluation form. These forms are private evaluations that the teachers who fill them out will return to Mrs. Cortez.

All of the above information is listed in the packets that you can either receive from Mrs. Cortez or Mrs. Thines.

We look forward to seeing our future cheerleaders!
