Hocus Pocus Review
A movie about evil witches being brought back to the world after their execution by some teenage boy, his sister, and a teenage girl makes Hocus Pocus, a classic Disney Halloween movie. Watching it again after so many years was just the nostalgia I needed this Halloween season. However, if you’re a first time watcher this movie is good all the same. It’s not exactly scary but it is funny and lighthearted. It also has good music and cinematography for the time it was released back in 1993. The characters are also easy to enjoy on both the “good” and “bad” side. I loved the witches as much as the main character, Max. I give this movie a full 10/10.
Hocus Pocus 2 Review
Never did I ever think that a movie about witches being brought back again by two teenage girls would make me cry. While nothing can beat a classic, this was perfectly executed as a sequel. It gave us backstory on the witches and gave it the perfect modern twist. Hocus Pocus was the perfect movie to have a sequel for since they could be brought back again and again. I am, however, happy it ended there. A tv show or multiple movies would’ve ruined it and made it drag on. 2 movies was all we needed. It did still make me cry though, I still hate when things end! It deserves a 10/10!
Breakdown of the Witches
In the movie Hocus Pocus there are three witches by the names Sarah, Mary, and Winnie/Winifred. They are from Salem, and were executed in the 17th century. But there is more of a backstory. At the beginning of Hocus Pocus 2, we see the three witches when they are much younger (and not yet witches) in the small village, Salem. The younger witches are however kicked out of there because Winnie did not want to marry a boy from Salem. They end up in a scary forest where they meet a witch. This witch makes them all witches too. Why was this all important to talk about or mention? Because it can help us understand the reason they are how they are. Sarah is the youngest sister, which we can know as the ditzy blonde witch. Sarah’s sisters raised her into the woman she is today so I believe she is fully unaware that her actions are evil. The middle sister, Mary, is definitely aware that what she is doing is bad and she is okay with that. Winnie is the oldest and was most influential to both her sisters. I believe she is aware what she is doing is wrong, being a witch was the first experience of her feeling heard. It was the first time she felt that someone older than her was caring about what she wanted. Winnie also had her sisters on her side and she loved her sisters. They ultimately mattered more than anything.
