Meet the New 2nd Grade Teacher!

Read the questions and answers below to learn more about the new 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Leonard!

1. Tell me about yourself.

”My name is Abbey Leonard and I am currently a second grade teacher here at Arlington, the school that I myself graduated from. I graduated with my undergrad degree from the University of Findlay in spring of 2020 and am now going back to the University to pursue my masters in Children's Literature. I married my husband Jake Leonard, who is also an alum of Arlington Local Schools, in the summer of 2020. We live in Arlington with our puppy, Dobby.”

 2. What is your favorite part about being a teacher?

“There are two things that I absolutely LOVE about being a teacher! I love that everyday is a new day. Though we try to keep our schedule the same, the content I am teaching, the stories that the students tell me, the things we are learning in this classroom... Each day it's different, and I absolutely love that. I also really love seeing my students foster a love for reading. I absolutely loved to read as a kid, and I still do, and I love to see that interest growing for my students. They are at an age that they are no longer learning how to read, but  they are now reading for meaning. They can find books and stories that they enjoy, and they can read to find out what is going to happen. I love hearing them tell me about the books they are reading, and why they love reading them!”

 3. Why did you choose to be a teacher?

“I wanted to be a teacher for those reasons above! Reading, math, creating content that will help my students learn, the celebrations, the stories they have to tell me, and the silly things they say...  I love everything about teaching!!”

 4. What brought you to Arlington? 

“I grew up in Arlington, and knew that if I had the opportunity, I would love to be able to teach here as well. Both my husband’s family and my family live in Arlington... this place is home!”
